George Balanchine's ballet "Prodigal Son," created in 1929, is making a significant return to the Atlanta Ballet. The ballet tells the biblical parable of a young man's rebellion and redemption, set to music by Sergei Prokofiev. With a storied history, the role has been performed by iconic dancers like Jerome Robbins and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Under the direction of artistic director Gennadi Nedvigin, who holds personal significance to the work, the revival opens the new season along with Balanchine's "Emeralds" and Justin Peck's contemporary piece, "In Creases" at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.
Nedvigin mentioned, 'After performing 'Prodigal Son,' Helgi promoted me to principal dancer, so it has special meaning to me.'
Nedvigin describes the upcoming program: 'This is a beautiful program because it features two ballets from different times in Balanchine's career, along with a contemporary piece.'
Balanchine's 'Prodigal Son' is based on the biblical parable and depicts a young man's journey through rebellion, seduction, and eventual redemption.
The revival of 'Prodigal Son' marks a significant moment for Atlanta Ballet, having not been seen since 1989.
