Did Mozart have friends? DW 05/28/2025
Briefly

The 2023 Mozartfest Wurzburg explores the theme of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's friendships, emphasizing that genuine bonds are essential for meaningful relationships. Artistic director Evelyn Meining reflects on Mozart's early fame as a child prodigy, noting the lack of close friendships during his travels across Europe. Instead, his connections were primarily within the musical realm, comprising colleagues, musicians, and patrons. This year's festival motto, "But through sound: friend Mozart," captures how music served as Mozart's primary form of expression and interaction, contrasting with today's social media friendships which often lack depth.
"A true friendship requires trust and mutual understanding," says artistic director Evelyn Meining, adding that even millions of followers on social media platforms cannot replace such a relationship.
Even later, one cannot imagine Mozart hanging out with friends at cozy dining events. These were more likely relationships built within a musical context: colleagues, musician friends, teachers, patrons or orchestra musicians from the bands.
Mozart caused a sensation in the mid-18th century as a so-called wunderkind. He traveled with his father through Europe for years, captivating court nobles with his talent on the violin and piano.
This year's Mozartfest Wurzburg is about Mozart's friendships, highlighting how music was his main form of expression and connection.
