"It finally gave me a sense of confidence that people can hear this music without thinking it's nonsense. I felt free to fully express who I am."
"Rather than employ long song vocals, Erkhembayar takes on a whisper-soft register on compositions such as Ulbar, singing wistfully about the beauty of sunset light."
Enkhjargal Erkhembayar, a 33-year-old singer from Ulaanbaatar, melds Mongolian folk music with acoustic jazz. Growing up singing in her yurt, she infuses her performances with emotional depth through circular-breathing and vulnerable lyrics. Her recent tours across China and Europe have helped her gain confidence and connect with diverse audiences. Erkhembayar's latest album, "Sonor," features a mix of styles, demonstrating growth in her artistic expression, and includes both folk tradition and contemporary influences, such as subtle jazz improvisations and nostalgic 80s sounds.
