Cycling stagiaires - what are they, and who are the riders interning in the WorldTour this autumn?
Briefly

The cycling transfer season begins in August, allowing riders and teams to announce signings. Major transfers, like Remco Evenepoel's move to Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, receive attention, yet numerous smaller transfers occur each year. Stagiaires, young riders on trial with teams from August to December, play a crucial role in the cycling ecosystem. Although stagiaire contracts are less common as teams favor young talent with full contracts, over 80 riders across all team levels are confirmed as stagiaires this season, including some within the WorldTour.
Stagiaires are young riders who will ride for a team on a trial basis between August and December, to gain racing experience and try to prove their worth for a full contract.
With teams putting more and more faith in young riders and giving them full contracts straight off the bat, stagiaire contracts are becoming a little less common, but still happen.
In total this year, more than 80 riders are already confirmed for a stagiaire this season across all team levels, with several of those in the WorldTour.
Stagiaire' is the French word for 'intern', and that basically sums up what a stagiaire stint is: a rider is essentially interning for a team, riding for them on a trial basis to gain experience.
