Remco Evenepoel is impressively competing at a high level just three races into his return from injury, showing remarkable resilience and skill. He achieved a victory at Brabantse Pijl, followed by a third place finish at Amstel Gold Race despite a crash, and a ninth place in La Flèche Wallonne. As he prepares to face Tadej PogaÄar at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, he expresses surprise at his performance, believing he is improving rapidly. Evenepoel aims for a third title despite having limited training time post-injury.
"Two months ago, I just started training, so it was pretty difficult to calculate how my form would be now. I've discussed it with the team now, and I was surprised after my first two races last week, the values and also the races that I could do already."
"I actually feel that I'm improving - in Flèche, I actually had the best day out of the three, I just blocked with the cold in the end."
"I didn't expect that I was going to be at this level already. Also in Amstel, it was straight away 260km with only 2 months of real training, you never know how that will end."
"Few riders would have been capable of living up to the challenge presented by PogaÄar on his favoured terrain, let alone without racing since October; however, Olympic champion Evenepoel is a special case and will similarly be looking for a third title at Liège on Sunday."
