Technology upgrades are common across consumer electronics, and e-bikes are increasingly part of that upgrade cycle. Tern partnered with refurbisher Upway to offer a dealer-backed trade-in program that gives riders credit toward new Tern e-bikes while feeding used bikes back into the resale market. Canyon introduced the Citylite: ON, bringing carbon fiber to urban commuter e-bikes in Europe. The FDNY responded to additional battery-related fires linked to an illegal battery repair business, highlighting ongoing safety and regulatory risks. Questions remain about reverse-capable e-trikes and potential updates to a top-selling cargo bike.
Upgrades with tech are common. We're mostly accustomed to getting a new phone every few years, and we know that sooner or later, laptops, smartwatches, or other tech will start to show their age, and we'll need to upgrade to current technology. So what about e-bikes?
Tern has teamed with Upway to help riders trade in older bikes for credit towards a new one. Upway is a popular bike refurbisher that buys your used bike and resells it at a markup. This partnership aims to make it easier than ever before to get into a new Tern ride. Said Steve Boyd, Tern's North American GM, "Partnering with Upway allows us to offer a simple, streamlined trade-in process through our dealer network, making it faster and more convenient for riders to find the right Tern for their needs."
Our Take: Tech we once thought a luxury on e-bikes 3-4 years ago is standard on many e-bikes today. People feeling the itch to get the latest features can always sell their old one privately to get more cash for a new one, but we've all encountered the hassles of selling online. This seems like good business for all involved, helping riders get credit towards the next ride in an easy manner, while Upway can supply the used bike market, and Tern can get more people into current-gen models. The rare win-win-win..
