TfL launches hunt for women who inspired Londoners to start cycling
""The Mayor and I want cycling to be an option for everyone in London, but women and girls unfortunately still face barriers that can prevent them from riding. This fun new initiative from TfL and Santander Cycles is a fantastic way to inspire women cyclists to embrace active travel as we continue building a greener, fairer, better London for everyone.""
"Members of the public are being invited to put forward the name of a professional women's cycling star or an 'unsung hero' from their own community, along with a short explanation of how that person encouraged them to take up cycling. The most frequently nominated professional riders and local cycling champions will then be recognised with their names displayed on Santander Cycles bikes across London this March."
Transport for London (TfL) and Santander Cycles have launched a public call for nominations to celebrate women who inspire others to take up cycling. Members of the public can nominate a professional women's cycling star or a local 'unsung hero' by emailing [email protected] with a short explanation of how the nominee encouraged them to cycle. The most frequently nominated professional riders and local cycling champions will have their names displayed on Santander Cycles bikes across London in March. The initiative aims to encourage more women and girls to cycle by addressing the existing gender imbalance. Nominations close at midnight on 8 February. Will Norman, London's Walking and Cycling Commissioner, said the Mayor and he want cycling to be an option for everyone, but women and girls still face barriers that can prevent them from riding.
