Why Iconic Bike Brands Are Suddenly Putting Drop Bars on Mountain Bikes
"Both Pivot Cycles and Pinarello have dropped new hardtail mountain bikes with heavy gravel influence as the lines between gravel and mountain biking continue to blur. But these brands aren't the first to take a swing at the niche category. Many brands have been doing this for years, but with iconic names with so much heritage in the sport backing the trend, I bet we are just getting started."
"The Pinarello Grevil MX touts the name associated with the Italian brand's gravel bike line, but with 29" boost wheels, a Fox 32 step-cast fork with 100mm of travel, and a SRAM XX Eagle mountain bike drivetrain, this is, on paper, a mountain bike - and the handlebars are the only part that would suggest otherwise. Pivot Cycles has also recently announced the Les SL, which is in a very similar category to the Grevil MX."
Pivot Cycles and Pinarello released carbon hardtail mountain bikes equipped with factory drop bars, merging gravel and mountain bike characteristics. The Pinarello Grevil MX features 29" boost wheels, a Fox 32 step-cast fork with 100mm travel, and a SRAM XX Eagle MTB drivetrain, making it effectively a mountain bike despite drop bars. Pivot's Les SL occupies a similar space with MTB components and wheels. Other brands like Ridley, Moots, and Salsa introduced or teased comparable models, indicating a broader, growing trend toward drop-bar MTBs influenced by gravel racing and longstanding niche experiments.
