Dire situation': Russia gains ground in Ukraine's Zaporizhia region
"Three-quarters of Zaporizhia have been occupied since 2022, the year Moscow also declared to have officially annexed all of it, along with three more regions Donetsk, Luhansk and Kherson. Russia has added earth-shattering glide bombs to its arsenal of drones and missiles that keep the city's 700,000 residents up and afraid at night. The heavy bombs, which are out of reach of Ukrainian air defence, can glide for dozens of kilometres and destroy entire apartment buildings."
"The front line itself is more audible. It's louder, we hear it from across the river, Tetiana, a psychologist whose patients feel increasingly alarmed and depressed, told Al Jazeera. She withheld her last name for security reasons. Even though life in the city seems to go on swimming pools and medical centres are open, for instance Tetiana feels that she and her family may have to pack up and flee soon."
Russian forces have intensified an advance toward towns in the Zaporizhzhia region, closing the frontline to roughly 40km from the city across the Dnipro River. Three-quarters of Zaporizhia has been occupied since 2022 after Moscow declared annexation of multiple regions. Russia is employing large glide bombs that evade Ukrainian air defences, glide for dozens of kilometres, and can destroy entire apartment buildings, keeping roughly 700,000 residents fearful at night. Frontline sounds are increasingly audible across the river, and civilians and mental-health professionals report rising alarm and readiness to evacuate. Ukrainian analysts say tens of thousands of Russian troops are advancing and seizing villages on the western flank.
