Here's why you should wear sunscreen, no matter your skin tone
Briefly

Darker-skinned individuals require sunscreen to protect against UV exposure despite having more melanin, which offers some natural protection. Dermatologists emphasize that all skin types need sun protection due to risks including sunburn, skin cancer, and other skin conditions like hyperpigmentation. While white individuals have a higher overall risk of skin cancer, Black and Hispanic people face challenges with melanoma survival rates and often present this cancer in less sun-exposed areas. Recommended SPF is at least 30, with advice to reapply frequently and use adequate amounts to ensure effectiveness without leaving a white cast.
"Everyone needs sunscreen. But the reasons that one might be reaching for sunscreen may differ depending on your skin tone," said Dr. Jenna Lester."
"All of the problems that you're coming to see me for are caused or worsened by the sun," Dr. Oyetewa Asempa often reminds her darker-skinned patients.
