Hit man who killed Bay Area journalist released on parole

Devaughndre Broussard, convicted of the murder of Oakland journalist Chauncey Bailey in 2007, was released from prison after completing nearly 18 years of his sentence. Bailey was shot point-blank upon entering his workplace due to alleged orders from Yusuf Bey IV, who wanted to stop him from investigating accusations against Your Black Muslim Bakery. Broussard was sentenced to 25 years after testifying against Bey, who received a life sentence without parole. Following his release, Broussard must adhere to geographic restrictions as part of his parole.
Broussard faced life in prison but was sentenced to 25 years in exchange for his testimony in 2011.
Broussard shot Bailey on Aug. 2, 2007, saying that he was ordered to do so by Yusuf Bey IV, an activist and religious leader.
Following his release, Broussard must stay within 70 miles of San Luis Obispo as a condition of his parole.
Bailey was the first American journalist killed over a domestic story since 1976.
