The longest student strike in U.S. history occurred at San Francisco State University from 1968 to 1969, driven by demands for greater representation and rights for Black students. Now, in 2023, these issues remain critical, especially with ongoing concerns about suppression of protests and diversity representation under the Trump administration. Keynote speaker Jimmy Garrett will highlight the legacy and impact of the Black Student Union created during the strike. The upcoming May 1 event aims to address low enrollment and graduation rates among Black students, reinforcing the importance of community involvement and education as pathways to empowerment.
With scholars from across the state expected to attend, Davis says this event will provide Black California State University students dealing low enrollment numbers and low graduation rates time on stage with the actual creators of the first BSU in the United States.
You can make your money in craps on the corner, or you can make double that at work-study. And the only thing you have to do is take this knowledge that we're going to give you and drive it back to the people.
More than a half century later, the issues the students fought for and against haven't gone away. In fact, they've only grown more pressing.
As an educator, Davis sees his work as a continuum of that.
