MBTA will issue warnings, citations for fare evasion starting in September
Briefly

Starting Sept. 8, MBTA will deploy Fare Engagement Representatives in blue shirts at stations and on vehicles to address fare evasion. Representatives will not be present on every trip but will appear occasionally to ask riders to pay or provide ID. Riders who refuse may receive a warning or a citation with fines up to $150 based on prior citations and violation type; citations are appealable for wrongful issuance or financial hardship. Representatives may also check reduced-fare T passes, assist with fare machines, answer fare questions, and help plan trips. Refusal to pay or provide information can lead to being asked to leave.
"Representatives won't be present on every trip but you can expect them on occasion as you travel,"
"The truth is fare revenue is a vital part of every day and how we operate,"
"And when people don't pay their fares, it impacts all of us. It slows down the progress we've worked so hard to achieve."
"By not paying your fare, ... you're placing your financial burden on others," Eng continued. "Paying your fare isn't just a transaction. It's essential."
