Hofstra wins CAA title to end 25-year NCAA tournament drought
"Freshman Preston Edmead scored a season-high 26 points and Hofstra is returning to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 25 years after defeating Monmouth 75-69 for the Coastal Athletic Association tournament championship on Tuesday night. Third-seeded Hofstra earned its fifth NCAA tournament bid and first in the tenure of Hofstra alum Speedy Claxton, who has been head coach since the 2021-22 season."
"A 3-pointer by Edmead gave Hofstra a 64-58 lead with 3½ minutes remaining. Monmouth battled back and got within 66-65 on a 3 by Justin Ray with 1:18 left. Hofstra's German Plotnikov hit a jumper for a 69-65 lead and two free throws by Edmead made it 71-65 with 14 seconds left."
"Claxton played for Hofstra from 1996-2000, leading the Pride to what was their first NCAA tournament berth in 23 seasons. He remains the program's all-time leader in assists and steals."
Hofstra secured the Coastal Athletic Association tournament championship with a 75-69 victory over Monmouth, earning an automatic NCAA tournament bid for the first time since 2001. Freshman Preston Edmead led the Pride with a season-high 26 points, while German Plotnikov contributed 10 points and Cruz Davis added 12. Hofstra built a 64-58 lead with 3:30 remaining before Monmouth mounted a comeback, getting within one point at 66-65. Hofstra's free throws down the stretch sealed the victory. Head coach Speedy Claxton, a Hofstra alumnus who played for the program from 1996-2000, achieved his first NCAA tournament bid in his tenure since 2021-22. Hofstra finished the season 24-10.
