Massachusetts officials, led by Governor Maura Healey, are working with Celtics ownership, the WNBA, the NBA, and the Mohegan Tribe to relocate the Connecticut Sun to Boston. Steve Pagliuca agreed to buy the Sun for $325 million and pledged a $100 million facility, with plans to move the franchise by the 2027 season. The WNBA did not present that purchase-and-relocation deal to the league board, allowing the Mohegan Tribe to negotiate with other groups. The WNBA requires approval for any relocation and has indicated expansion applicants may receive priority. Boston did not apply in recent expansion rounds.
The league has been saying this is a timing issue and Boston needs to wait, and I don't believe that Boston should wait. Nor should the Tribe have to wait. We've got women players right now, management, staff, and a women's professional league that would benefit from this. Why people would stand in the way of that, I don't understand. Again, it does nothing to take away from expansion opportunities or future expansion opportunities.
Why people would stand in the way of that, I don't understand.
