OTM Open Thread 9/16: Now we go
"The Astros and Rangers are in the middle of a series, with the Astros taking the first game. Without digging in too much, my gut says we now want Houston to take the final two games of the series. I'm personally only concerned with getting into the postseason, not the seeding, and you only need to beat one of the Astros or Rangers (and Guardians) to get there."
"If the Rangers drop the next two and the Red Sox take two out of three, we'll be five ahead of Texas, all but eliminating them. I'll admit I didn't realize the Guardians were 9-1 in their last 10 games, but I won't take them seriously for now. At the end of the day, if the Red Sox win games then everything will figure itself out."
The Red Sox begin a three-game series against the Athletics tonight at 6:45. The Astros lead an ongoing series against the Rangers after winning the first game, creating a preferable scenario if Houston wins the final two contests. The primary focus remains reaching the postseason rather than achieving a particular seed. A combination of the Rangers losing two games and the Red Sox winning two of three would place Boston five games ahead of Texas and largely eliminate the Rangers. The Guardians have gone 9-1 in their last ten games, but current emphasis stays on Red Sox victories to determine outcomes.
