Mayor Eric Adams appointed Iris Rodriguez-Rosa as the new NYC Parks Commissioner, making her the first Latina to hold this position. This decision follows the departure of former commissioner Sue Donoghue. Rodriguez-Rosa has been with the Parks Department since 1986 and previously served as first deputy commissioner, managing NYC's lifeguards and tackling workforce challenges. In her introductory remarks, she emphasized the importance of parks as vital greenspaces for all New Yorkers, expressing her eagerness to collaborate with Mayor Adams in enhancing the city's expansive park system, which spans over 30,000 acres.
I am excited and honored to assume the position as commissioner of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, the greatest urban park system in the country with over 30,000 acres of parkland.
Parks are the greenspaces that serve as a great equalizer in our city and ensure everyone can get outside and enjoy our nature areas, playgrounds, beaches, pools, and recreation centers.
