""We are focusing on individualized specific treatment, so people are moving away from the criminal justice system completely," said Deanna Logan, director of the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice."

A new 15-story building at 275 Atlantic Ave will serve as the city's first borough-based jail, part of a plan to replace Rikers Island. This facility is one of four humane jail sites being developed, with a focus on individualized treatment to help individuals move away from the criminal justice system. The nearly $3 billion project will house 1,040 incarcerated men and is scheduled for completion in 2029, with Rikers Island set to close by August 2027.
