New report uncovers high lead levels at NYCHA daycares
Briefly

Recent investigations found elevated lead levels in children at three daycare centers run by NYCHA, including the Brevoort Children's Center. These lead levels were detected between October 2024 and January 2025, surpassing complaints from previous years. Evidence of lead paint contamination was found in various areas within these facilities. The city’s response appears slow, as comprehensive lead testing in other NYCHA daycares is scheduled only for 2026. Parents of affected children expressed frustration over the abrupt center closures and lack of alternative childcare options.
The investigation revealed a total of four recent cases of elevated lead levels in children attending three NYCHA-run daycare centers, including the Brevoort Children's Center.
Lead levels were detected between October 2024 and January 2025, exceeding the number of complaints reported in all of 2022 and 2023.
Evidence of lead paint contamination was found in multiple areas like walls, windows, and radiators across the three daycare sites under investigation.
Despite the risks posed to young children, comprehensive lead testing in other NYCHA daycare centers is only scheduled for 2026.
