On June 8, 2025, New York City Mayor Eric Adams signed an executive order aimed at combating rising antisemitism by recognizing the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of the term. This initiative responds to a concerning increase in antisemitic incidents within the city and nationwide, particularly following the Hamas attacks in October 2023. The order directs city agencies to use this definition to identify and address antisemitic acts. Adams is also advocating for the City Council to codify this definition into law to provide a structured response to hate crimes targeting the Jewish community.
Antisemitism is a vile disease that's been spreading across our nation and our city. What's worse, since Hamas' terror attacks on October 7, 2023, we have seen this hateful rhetoric become normalized on our campuses, in our communities, and online as antisemitic propaganda far too often masquerades as 'activism.'
The executive order recognizes the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's (IHRA), a working definition of antisemitism. Amidst a historic rise in antisemitic incidents across the five boroughs and the rest of the nation.
