'Rosa Casella Way' dedicated in Dyker Heights to honor beloved community advocate * Brooklyn Paper
""It was a moment saying, 'of course' we would bestow one of New York City's greatest honors so that not only family, friends and neighbors who knew this person and their family, but everyone else forever will ask who that amazing human was," Avilés said."
""Avilés added that she was "truly humbled" by Brooklynites like Casella, "who give their love and compassion to the community to make the world a better place.""
""a woman of faith and family; a devoted mother and grandmother and loving friend and neighbor. Known, loved and respected by so many, Rosa will be so deeply missed and remembered fondly for her contributions, charm and ability to make others feel welcome.""
Family, friends and neighbors gathered in Dyker Heights to co-name the corner of 71st Street and 11th Avenue as "Rosa Casella Way" to honor Rosa Casella's decades of community service. City Council Member Alexa Avilés sponsored the co-naming and praised Casella's dedication, calling the honor a "no-brainer" and saying the designation ensures future generations will ask who she was. Born in Italy and raised in SoHo, Casella served on Community Board 11 and led the Neighborhood Improvement Association for 28 years, developing programs for youth, seniors and families. She volunteered with numerous organizations and died in November 2024.
