Bob Major, a 66-year-old from New Jersey, was laid off after a long career in financial services. He faced challenges in finding new employment and decided against retiring. Instead, he pursued his long-held dream of starting his own handyman business. After obtaining necessary licenses and insurance, he launched his business in May 2019 and quickly gained clients through local advertising. His initial services included changing toilet seats, which led to various handyman tasks, all receiving positive feedback from customers.
After nearly a year looking for work, I started thinking about opening my own business, something I'd always wanted to do. I thought about what I could do, landing on the idea that I was very handy around the house, doing little jobs.
Still, I knew that I wasn't ready to retire. I'd seen people retire early and get bored with doing the same thing day in and day out. I watched others become a shadow of who they once were because they didn't know what to do with themselves in retirement.
