Doug Lebda, 55, died Sunday in an all-terrain vehicle accident at a family farm in North Carolina. LendingTree announced his unexpected death and appointed Scott Peyree, the company’s chief operating officer and president, as CEO effective immediately. Lead independent director Steve Ozonian will assume the role of chairman of the board. LendingTree shares fell more than 4% in afternoon trading following the news. Lebda founded LendingTree in 1996, launched the platform nationally in 1998, took the company public in 2000, was acquired by IAC/InterActiveCorp, and the company spun off again in 2008. LendingTree operates an online loan marketplace and owns brands including CompareCards and ValuePenguin.
