1 injured, 2 rescued during early morning boat fire off Santa Cruz County coast

A fishing boat caught fire off the Santa Cruz County coastline around 7:30 a.m., prompting an urgent response. Crews were dispatched to extinguish the flames on the 48-foot vessel. Despite initial efforts, the fire escalated, engulfing the boat completely. Two crew members were evacuated to Capitola Wharf where they received medical assistance for smoke inhalation. Additionally, one first responder exhibited symptoms of smoke inhalation and was taken to Dominican Hospital for treatment. Mutual aid was called from the city of Monterey Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Crews were called around 7:30 a.m. after receiving reports that a fishing vessel had caught fire about 1 mile from shore.
Despite early indicators of progress, the firefighting effort proved unsuccessful as the fire got worse, ultimately completely engulfing the vessel.
The two crewmembers on the boat were evacuated to the Capitola Wharf where they were provided irrigation to clear smoke from their eyes.
One responder began exhibiting symptoms of smoke inhalation and was taken for evaluation and treatment at Dominican Hospital.
