San Bernardino County is home to about 3,000 abandoned mines that attract thrill-seekers, drawn by their historical significance from the gold rush era. However, these sites are hazardous, evidenced by a recent rescue where two men became stuck in a 250-foot mineshaft due to equipment failure. Fortunately, they signaled for help early on, preventing a potential tragedy. The San Bernardino County Fire Department, skilled in mine rescues, emphasizes the excitement of exploring these historic sites while cautioning against the dangers involved.
What kept this from turning into a tragedy... was their approach. They realized pretty early that this thing isn't going to work and we are going to need help.
It sounds very exciting... but I have to put in that cautionary tale that this is not an endeavor to be taken lightly.
