43-car pileup snarls Central Valley as dense fog drops visibility near zero
"Dense fog in the Central Valley sparked a massive 43-car pileup crash near Bakersfield on Tuesday, closing the highway for hours, reports said. The crash happened on the eastbound side of Highway 58 at Towerline Road before 8:30 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. Authorities had closed all lanes by 9 a.m. and didn't fully reopen the highway until Wednesday at approximately 12:08 a.m. The pileup involved a total of 43 cars, and nine people were taken to the hospital for minor to severe injuries, KABC-TV reported."
"A dense fog advisory was in effect the morning of the crash, with authorities warning the public about "extremely hazardous" driving conditions. According to the National Weather Service, the dense fog in the area is creating visibility down to zero every morning this week in the Central Valley. Tuesday's pileup marks the latest in a string of fog-related crashes, following a 17-car pileup in Fresno earlier this month."
