6 hospitalized after explosion in Bay Area neighborhood
"PG&E spokesperson Jason King told SFGATE the utility received a notification at about 7:35 a.m. that a construction crew, not related to PG&E, had damaged a gas line while digging on Lewelling Boulevard. PG&E crews were immediately dispatched to the scene to isolate the damaged line and stop the flow of gas. "The safety of our customers, hometowns and crews is PG&E's most important responsibility," King said in a statement to SFGATE."
"The damaged line caused gas to be released at multiple locations. PG&E crews worked to isolate the affected facilities, and the flow of gas was fully stopped by about 9:25 a.m. Roughly 10 minutes later, an explosion erupted in the area, causing a structure fire."
"Two of the six injured were allegedly construction workers who had been in the street at the time of the explosion. Two residents were unaccounted for after the explosion; fire officials say they likely were at school or work. Alameda County Fire Department officials said 75 firefighters were dispatched to the three-alarm fire. Two homes and what appeared to be a workshop were damaged."
