Saltwater Oyster Depot, a seafood restaurant in Inverness, has closed amid an unresolved tax backlog. Owner Luc Chamberland acknowledged falling behind on sales and tax reporting during the pandemic after cutting administrative staff. A recent audit revealed substantial unpaid taxes, leading to a suspension of the restaurant's liquor license by California authorities, which requires timely reporting and payment of sales taxes. The restaurant indicated a temporary closure on social media, although it may last longer than initially planned due to these issues.
"If you're in any business that involves the sale of goods and services, one of the sacrosanct things you have to do is report accurately and timely your sales and remit your sales tax. We fell behind."
Saltwater Oyster Depot's liquor license suspension seems to have come around the same time the restaurant announced a temporary closure on Instagram.
