The introduction of bike lanes on El Camino Real has led to significant loss of parking, adversely affecting a small business operated by Rajesh Cheethirala. He has reported a notable decrease in customer visits, with numbers dropping from nearly 4,000 in May 2023 to about 2,406 in May 2024. Customers frequently express frustration over the lack of available parking. Cheethirala's business struggles are further compounded by reduced employee hours and visible scarcity of retail parking spaces.
"Parking is vital to my survival," Cheethirala said, highlighting the direct impact of the loss of parking on his business viability.
Cheethirala mentioned that despite the installation of bike lanes, he rarely sees bikers, estimating, "Maybe one biker a day goes on this road," indicating that the anticipated increase in bike traffic has not materialized.
From March to May of 2023, Cheethirala welcomed up to 3,940 customers in May, but in May 2024, that number dropped to 2,406, showcasing a significant decline tied to parking issues.
Cheethirala stated, "I spoke to several of my guests, and the first complaint was that they couldn't find parking," drawing attention to customer frustrations and their impact on sales.
