Cal rides Sagapolutele's late-game magic to upset win over No. 21 SMU on an emotional night
"We talked about being ready for a dogfight, expecting to win, knowing there's going to be a time in this game where it may feel impossible to win."
"Accurate. The mastery of the plays - these aren't easy plays that we're putting in there sometimes. But who he is as a competitor . . . he's not here for the 330 yards. He's here for the winning."
Cal overcame significant offseason and coaching uncertainty to upset No. 21 SMU 38-35 as freshman quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele threw for a career-best 330 yards and four touchdowns. Sagapolutele completed a perfect, 5-for-5, 61-yard final drive to score the game-winner after the Bears surrendered a 31-14 fourth-quarter lead. Interim coach Nick Rolovich praised the team's competitiveness and the quarterback's accuracy and command of the offense. The victory secured Cal's first winning season since 2019 and a 7-5 overall record (4-4 ACC), while denying SMU a conference championship game return; a bowl assignment will be determined next Sunday.
