California will offer state-branded generic insulin pens at a suggested consumer price of $11 per pen, sold in five-packs for $55 and available to pharmacies for $45, beginning Jan. 1. The program is the first state-led sale of prescription drugs under a state label and follows a $50 million contract with nonprofit Civica to produce the insulin. Officials expect the program to help reduce overall drug costs; the state previously sold naloxone below market price.
