Commentary: Will Newsom's ambitions save UCLA from giving in to Trump?
Briefly

Trump's administration has threatened UCLA with freezing over $500 million in federal grants and demanding a payout nearing $1 billion. While Harvard seems poised to concede to Trump’s demands regarding antisemitism and diversity policies, California's Governor Gavin Newsom has asserted that UCLA will not submit to such pressure, emphasizing a defense of academic freedom. As a member of the Regents, Newsom’s influence is critical in this decision, which holds significant implications not only for UCLA but also for his potential political future and California's standing as a whole.
"We will not be complicit in this kind of attack on academic freedom on this extraordinary public institution," Newsom said recently. "We are not like some of those other institutions that have followed a different path."
So Newsom will be the decider, to steal a phrase from President George W. Bush. And deciding to capitulate not only looks bad, but has terrible consequences that would dog a candidate Newsom.
