"will improve parking availability"
"Today, Sundays are among the busiest days for businesses such as restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues,"
"Updating meter hours helps ensure parking is available when demand is the highest, including weekends."
"only ensure I and other Oaklanders will shop elsewhere on Sundays - WTF."
The city will charge for metered parking on Sundays from noon to 6 p.m., starting Jan. 4, 2026, with a 30-day warning period before fines. A prior test included high-traffic areas such as around Lake Merritt, where some residents viewed the change as an attempt to gentrify the lake. The change is intended to improve parking availability by encouraging shorter stays and to help businesses by keeping customers churning. Other cities have begun charging for Sunday parking, replacing traditional free Sunday parking rooted in 20th-century Christian rest days. Social media responses were negative, and the measure is expected to add about $1.6 million annually to the general fund. The city has not indicated whether flex pricing will be used for Sunday meters.
