"Gavin Newsom, California's Democratic governor, told CBS News Sunday Morning he plans to make a decision on whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections are over. Yeah, I'd be lying otherwise, Newsom said in response to a question on whether he would give serious thought to a White House bid after the 2026 elections. I'd just be lying. And I'm not I can't do that."
"Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused Newsom of not caring about Californians in an interview with Fox News on Sunday as Duffy revealed plans to pull federal funds from California and threatened to revoke California's ability to issue commercial driver's licenses. I'm about to pull $160m from California, Duffy said, after US homeland security said earlier this week an undocumented semi truck driver caused a fatal crash in California that killed three people and injured four."
Gavin Newsom intends to wait until after the 2026 midterm elections to decide whether to run for president in 2028. He said making a decision before the midterms would be dishonest and that he cannot do that. Newsom's term as governor ends in January 2027 and term limits prevent another statewide run. He has become a prominent critic of the Trump administration and backed a ballot measure aimed at increasing Democratic congressional seats in response to Republican redistricting. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy threatened to withhold federal funds and revoke California's commercial driver's license authority following a fatal crash, while Newsom's office noted federal reauthorizations allowed the driver's employment.
