I-5 rest stops close indefinitely through crucial California corridor
"Both Tejon Pass rest areas, off I-5 northbound and southbound, closed Friday due to storm damage, "including accumulation of sediment and wastewater into the facilities' water supply," Caltrans wrote on social media. There is currently no timeline for when the rest stops will reopen. "We have a contractor ... doing some damage scoping to get an idea of the extent," Christian Lukens, a Caltrans spokesperson, told SFGATE on Monday. "We're hoping to have the contractor start later today or sometime tomorrow.""
"Lukens shared a photo taken by a Caltrans maintenance crew that illustrates the extent of the damage in the area. In the image, a 6-foot fence near the water supply at one of the rest stops is nearly fully submerged in mud. The crew estimated that the fence line here had accumulated 4 feet of sediment, according to the agency's post."
Both Tejon Pass rest areas on Interstate 5, northbound and southbound, closed Friday after a heavy storm deposited several feet of mud and wastewater into facility systems. Caltrans reported sediment and wastewater contamination of the water supply and has no timeline for reopening. A contractor was engaged to scope damage and begin repairs as soon as possible. A Caltrans maintenance photo shows a six-foot fence nearly fully submerged and an estimated four feet of accumulated sediment. The rest areas lie between Gorman and Lebec, leaving nearly 60 miles to the next open I-5 rest stops in Buttonwillow. Forecast rain could prolong closures into the new year.
