"California travelers faced heavy traffic on a crucial freeway connecting Los Angeles with the Central Valley due to multiple vehicle crashes the day before Christmas Eve. Since 5 a.m. Tuesday, Interstate 5 through the Grapevine has seen one traffic jam after another, in both directions, as motorists move across the state during the holiday travel rush. "This one is pretty bad," Officer Gregorio Rodriguez said."
"CHP announced the first accident via social media at 5:49 a.m., after a big rig fire stopped all southbound lanes on I-5. Traffic halted at the base of the Grapevine, backing cars into the valley toward the split with Highway 99. All but one lane reopened by 7 a.m., but the wreck was just the beginning on a busy, wet travel day. At 1:48 p.m., CHP learned of a new crash involving multiple vehicles on northbound I-5 near Grapevine Road."
Since 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Interstate 5 through the Grapevine experienced repeated traffic jams in both directions as holiday motorists traveled across the state. A big rig fire at 5:49 a.m. stopped all southbound lanes, backing traffic toward the Highway 99 split; all but one lane reopened by 7 a.m. Additional crashes occurred later, including a crash in which a semitruck struck a van and downed power poles, forcing a northbound closure that reopened about an hour later. Smaller collisions occurred throughout the day, and vehicles slowed in both directions as drivers looked at wreckage. Travelers should expect significant delays between Gorman and the Central Valley.
