Muir Woods reopens for 1 week thanks to private donations during government shutdown
"It feels great, I'm glad people have heard about the opening they came back,"
"Oh I love it. I was tripping all over my feet looking up, they're so tall,"
"I'm really grateful, my mom went on a tour earlier this week and they weren't able to come in because it was closed. I fully expected we weren't going, but they said Muir Woods is open, I was so happy,"
"If you have the opportunity to give people please and education is always better than shutting something down,"
Private donations from park concessionaires and vendors reopened Muir Woods National Monument during the government shutdown, allowing free public admission through October 31. Nature guides and volunteers resumed leading tours among the ancient redwoods, and visitors, including out-of-state tourists, returned eagerly to see the trees. The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy coordinated fundraising that covered reopening costs. Local tour operators resumed shuttling large numbers of visitors into the grove. Alcatraz tours also continued during the shutdown after Hornblower Cruises provided a donation to keep ferry operations running. The reopenings are temporary and dependent on continued funding during the closure.
