"It's crazy that she lives in Oakland. So close to our home, and she is an Olympian,"
"Just the sound of her spinning and jumping is like, everyone is silent, and we are all against the board in awe,"
"There is a lot of strength work that you need to keep up. The technical abilities that she has, and then it's mental effort as well. Everything is fear. Like, you might fall on this jump,"
"I think that is where Alysa stands out -- her mental fortitude."
Alysa Liu from Oakland won the U.S. individual women's figure skating gold, the first U.S. title in 24 years. She trained at Oakland Ice Center, where photos and records from 2016 through 2025 document her achievements. Local youth and recreational skaters expressed pride and awe at her proximity and accomplishments. Observers describe silence and amazement at her spins and jumps and highlight her technical ability, strength work, and mental fortitude. Liu became the youngest U.S. women's national champion at 13 in 2019 and later returned from retirement to win the 2025 championship.
