Bob 'Doc' Scott, a local surfing legend who passed away at 97, significantly impacted the Santa Cruz surf community by bringing young surfers together in his 15-seat bus. His primary focus was on inclusion and experiences, not just winning trophies. Scott-Rogers, his daughter, shared how he advised her to enjoy even short surfing trips. A paddle out is planned to honor him on his 98th birthday at Steamer Lane, highlighting the community's way of mourning and celebrating his legacy of passion for the sport.
It was that he was inclusive and that inclusion meant, to as many young surfers as he could, bringing them (into) the fold and giving them experiences.
The experience of surfing, of gliding down the smooth face of a wave while a wall of whitewash gave chase, was one that Scott never grew tired of.
Getting into the water is a common way the surfing community collectively mourns one of its own in public, but it was also a way of life for Scott.
He'd say 'Brenda just go out for 20 minutes, like a heat,' reflecting his love for sharing the water experience.
