""We're not trying to stand in the way of progress," Monarch Truck Center President Nicole Guetersloh told San José Spotlight. "It's just we'd also like to stay around.""
""Government agencies have an obligation to seek justice or fairness rather than winning," Block told San José Spotlight. "I think in this case, the VTA position is more about winning and trying to avoid fair compensation.""
Monarch Truck Center operated at 195 N. 30th St. in San Jose for 35 years before VTA acquired the property by eminent domain in 2024. The acquisition was for a planned BART extension through Silicon Valley. Monarch's executives contend that VTA did not provide adequate compensation for the financial impact of the forced move. Mediation failed and a jury trial is scheduled for March 9. Court documents show Honco Investment Company owned the parcel and VTA reached settlements with Honco and three other businesses on the 9.4-acre site. VTA valued Monarch's relevant losses at $0, according to Monarch's attorney. VTA declined to comment, citing internal policies, and other displaced businesses have raised similar complaints during the expansion.
