"I'm looking forward to working in partnership with her at this critical juncture for San Jose. The data shows our approaches have been working - and I know Sarah will help our progress continue and expand even as we face a difficult budget year."
Sarah Zarate will serve as chief of staff for San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, beginning her role after transitioning from the city manager's office on Monday. Jim Reed vacated the position after more than a decade under two mayors to lead a statewide policy initiative on behalf of Mahan. Zarate spent seven years in the city manager's office and previously directed the Office of Administration, Policy and Intergovernmental Relations for four years. Her municipal work has addressed gun harm reduction, homelessness and blight, wage theft enforcement, and domestic violence prevention. The appointment arrives as San Jose faces five City Council races and significant fiscal pressures that will shape contentious budget deliberations.
