Trial set for Martinez man indicted in two 2022 killings

Richard Raymond Klein, 54, of Martinez, is charged with two fatal shootings that occurred in 2022 and faces a jury trial beginning Jan. 27. The trial in Solano County Superior Court is expected to last five weeks and will include special circumstances allegations. Pretrial motions include a motion to suppress evidence and a motion to sever on Nov. 10, and in limine motions on Jan. 21 and 22. Klein is a previously convicted felon and faces counts of murder, two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and an allegation of committing murder while released on his own recognizance. Prosecutor Barry Shapiro is leading the case; Judge John B. Ellis set the schedule.

Deputy District Attorney Barry Shapiro leads the prosecution against Klein, a previously convicted felon who was indicted for the killings by a Solano County grand jury on June 30, 2023. The Solano County District Attorney's Office then combined the murder charges into one case, with alleged special circumstances. Court records indicate that the case is no longer a capital case.
