""People do a better job of making their homes hardened with fire safe landscaping if they see the why behind it," said Mark Brown, executive officer, Marin Wildfire Authority."
""In California, we've seen what devastating wildfires can do. It's preventable, it's predictable, next step is how you change your home in the event of a fire," said Marin County Fire Chief Jason Weber."
An Ember Stomp wildfire prevention festival at the Marin County Fairgrounds taught attendees how to harden landscapes and create at least five feet of defensible space around homes. Demonstrations showed how quickly common plants such as juniper and bamboo ignite and how fire-safe mulch burns more slowly. Fire officials encouraged drought-tolerant, fire-safe landscaping and home-hardening measures to reduce vulnerability during critical fire season.
