Democratic candidates for California governor are focused on courting influential donors while awaiting a decision from Kamala Harris on her candidacy. Since losing to President Trump, potential gubernatorial contenders have faced uncertainty as they navigate their campaigns. They share concerns about whether to invest time and resources in campaigns given Harris' potential entry. Some candidates are considering alternative offices due to this limbo. Harris' star power may disrupt the race dynamics, while her past presidential runs raise questions regarding her political ambitions.
"It creates a little bit of a limbo situation," said Tony Thurmond, the state superintendent of public instruction who launched his gubernatorial campaign in 2023.
The Democrats in the race are talking to many of the same potential donors, Thurmond said, and most have the same question: "Is she going to run?" The only answer, Thurmond said, is an unsatisfying one: "We don't know."
