'A good little soul': Community gathers at vigil for Toronto boy killed by stray bullet | CBC News
Briefly

About 150 community members gathered outside 15 Martha Eaton Way in North York for a candlelight vigil to honor eight-year-old Jahvai Roy, who was killed by a stray bullet. Holly Roy described Jahvai as having an energetic spirit and an early anti-violence stance and asked that his memory remain positive. The boy was struck while lying in bed after gunshots about 12:30 a.m., was rushed to hospital and pronounced dead; he was buried on Wednesday. Two other apartment units were struck but no other injuries occurred. Organizers held the vigil to support the grieving family and oppose gun violence.
"I'm trying so hard to hang on to the memory of that morning my son's life was taken and not the moments leading up to his death," Roy said. "He jumped out of bed and he's like 'Have a good day, Mom. I'll see you later, I love you.' That was an everyday thing. I was robbed. I was robbed of that."
"I wish this on nobody. It's an indescribable pain I wish on no one," Roy said. "But I feel the love from my community, my city. I feel the love and support. And I thank everybody for reaching out," she said.
