Air Canada faced a third consecutive day of flight cancellations due to a strike by flight attendants. Despite a federal directive for the attendants to return to work, the Canadian Union of Public Employees insisted members remain on strike until the government facilitates negotiations for a new agreement. With 500,000 customers affected, the Jobs Minister proposed arbitration to extend the expired labor contract. The union expressed determination to continue striking even amidst potential legal repercussions, asserting the importance of their rights and protections.
CUPE National President Mark Hancock made it loud and clear that our members will NOT be returning to work until such time as the government orders Air Canada back to the bargaining table where we can reach a tentative agreement that our members can vote on. We will not have our rights and protections removed.
If it means folks like me going to jail, then so be it. If it means our union being fined, then so be it.
