Canadian art museum gets $36m funding boost for expansion from provincial government

Ontario's provincial government is investing C$50 million in the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, aiming to modernize and expand the largest publicly-funded art museum dedicated to Canadian and Indigenous art. This investment, the first in 43 years, will fund essential repairs and upgrades to the 70-year-old building, ensuring the museum continues to serve as a premier cultural institution and tourist attraction. McMichael's executive director emphasized the importance of this expansion for preserving Canadian culture during challenging economic times.

"Our government's investment will help McMichael modernise and grow, protect the gallery's C$750m collection and secure the institution's status as a world-class cultural tourism attraction for generations to come."
