Damian Hudson was convicted of second-degree murder for the July 7, 2023 death of Karolina Huebner-Makurat in Toronto. The shooting occurred outside the South Riverdale Community Health Centre during a fight involving Hudson and two rival drug dealers, and a stray bullet struck Huebner-Makurat. At the sentencing hearing, two Crown lawyers read emotional victim impact statements. Her husband Adrian Makurat described how their daughters Claudia and Nella expressed grief and confusion about their mother’s absence. More than 30 victim impact statements were delivered, with three presented in person. Family, friends, neighbours, and co-workers portrayed Huebner-Makurat as bright, kind, compassionate, and deeply loved, with her death affecting the community and reaching relatives in Europe.
"Adrian Makurat, Karolina's husband, said his daughter Claudia, now 10, told him: "If I could tell you one thing, it would be that I love you, Mama, and I wish I could talk to you, to hear your voice. I know you'd be happy for me as I'm doing well at school." His daughter Nella, now seven, said she could no longer remember the sound of her mother's voice. "How many years/days has it been since Mama died? I think about what it's like in heaven. I don't remember holding her, and I don't know what kind of clothes she's wearing in heaven. I wonder if when you die, you stay the way you are. I miss you, Mama.""
