"Almost two years after Indigenous remains were uncovered in Toronto's Riverdale neighbourhood, the city is finally moving forward with its investigation of the burial site. The next steps include finishing processing the soil already removed from the site, and consulting with Indigenous communities with how to proceed. I'm very happy today. I was angered and disappointed that it had to wait so long"
"The site has sat covered and guarded while decisions were made about the best way to investigate and determine the origins of the remains. According to ASI Heritage, the firm hired by the city as part of the investigation, processing of the previously excavated soil has already revealed the remains of at least five individuals. One major complication with determining the origins of the site is how many Indigenous nations have been present in the area."
Indigenous human remains were unearthed in Toronto's Riverdale neighbourhood in January 2024 during water-line work on Withrow Avenue near Broadview Avenue. The site remained covered and guarded while authorities processed soil already removed; processing has revealed remains of at least five individuals. The city will finish processing existing soil and engage Indigenous communities to determine ancestry and next steps. Multiple Indigenous nations have historically occupied the area, complicating origin determinations. ASI Heritage, the firm handling the investigation, and Indigenous representatives, including Six Nations archaeological supervisors, have been present on site to ensure ancestors are cared for and respected.
