""She was my everything," Herbst said. "She was my biggest supporter.""
""About half of my time I was just in a tent and sleeping bag and I'd have to find some place to stay. And then I'd have to make my dinner and then I'd have to do my log book and journal. And then I'd have to figure out, OK, where am I going tomorrow?""
""I felt her energy.""
Mark Herbst, 69, cycled 30,000 kilometres through 25 countries over 324 days to raise roughly $50,000 for the University Health Network's Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in honour of his late wife, Jackie Herbst, who died in December 2021 of squamous cell cancer. Herbst began the journey in Bangkok on Jan. 7 and arrived in Toronto after cycling and flying between countries, sometimes disassembling his bike for flights. The trip provided daily purpose, logistical challenges, frequent tent camping, and generous assistance from people along the route. Herbst hopes to validate a Guinness World Record as the oldest person to circumnavigate the world by bicycle.
